OK, OK so we’re behind the ball … a bit!

I know. It’s been an age since Derrek last posted anything, and I’m not blameless either. But the past two months, although not busy for us particularly at the inn here in Fryeburg, have been busy on other fronts. Firstly, we have a brand new website – don’t know if you’ve had a chance to see it, but why not pop-in for a quick look round. Innkeepers with smaller inns like ours have to do as much of the work themselves as possible, so just the website has taken me about a month of intensive labor! We also have a new logo and we’ll be updating all our marketing materials as we get to them. I think we’re getting new coffee mugs too – pewter colored with our new logo!

It seems as though it’s been a long Spring, which we love, but Summer’s coming on and it’s time to plan for vacations. North Conway looks to be abuzz with various things going on all summer, from a Balloon festival this weekend (the large variety with baskets hanging off them) to the regular things like the Bach festival at the end of August. Now all we hope for is good weather. One event that needs it is the annual Fields on the Saco dinner, sponsored by the local farms and featuring 5 of the top chef’s in the Mount Washington Valley, each preparing a course from as many local ingredients as possible. Derrek’s one of the chef’s, so he’s been busy preparing his recipe for the salad course, using hops which seem to be his favorite ingredient recently. The beer brewing is going awfully well …. Anyhow, if want a superb dinner the weekend of August 28th, let us know. I don’t think we’re going to do a formal package, but we’ll be happy to put something together including tickets to the dinner for anyone wanting to come that weekend.

Maine is keeping it strange with snow and spring at the same time

Hilary has run off to spend Easter with her family, leaving me and the cats to mind the house. Initially she told me of the nice (short-lived) weather at her mom’s house. Here, on Monday was snow followed by nearly 6 inches of rain. The back yard looked regatta worthy and the Saco was the highest that I’ve ever seen it without any ice dam to enhance the level. I’ve heard that it reached over 9 feet above normal, for spring. For those that wander down to the town beach in the summer just look at the bridge and imagine the water is within 3 feet of the bottom of the bridge! After the rain came spring. Our temps jumped up to 83F on Saturday. So to make sure Hilary thinks I did something while she was gone I managed to rake the lawn, move beer to secondary fermentation, chase the cats, and go for my first spring bike ride. And today was also brilliant, sunny, mid 70′s, brewing more beer, and the first daffodil arrived. I checked in with Hilary and it’s cold and wet in England right now. On Wednesday when we are forecast for a warm rain she will be in snow in Scotland… for the first time I will be the one with a tan once she returns. Here are some photos from the Saco flooding and some spring flowers.

Spring is springing, although a bit early…

We’re back from Texas and it seems Maine is trying hard to get into the spring frame of mind. We’ve had days in the upper 60′s and then some spring rain and of course followed by some light snow. However, unlike 2 years ago where we still had 5 feet of snow in the back, we have no more snow left in the yard. I want to clean out the flower beds and make everything look good, but this is Maine and we’re still not out of the woods (as it were) for freezes so the insulating leaves get to stay in place.

So, instead of cleaning flower beds I’m going to brew some beer this weekend. This recipe, my own, called, “Mad Half Hour”, is for the Samuel Adams Longshot contest. Then some more brewing next weekend, an attempt at a Bavarian wiess bier. Also have a few more bits of brewing gear arriving soon (don’t tell Hilary). My dreams of a kegerator are getting closer to reality. And for those that don’t know what a kegerator is, it is a dedicated fridge for my beer.

Valentine’s Day, President’s Day weekend in the valley

You’d have to be living in a dark hole somewhere not to know that it’s Valentine’s weekend this weekend.  But it’s also President’s Day on Monday which means a 3-day weekend for lots of us and an opportunity to get away.  We still have rooms available for one or two nights this weekend if you’d like to share some special time with your mate at our cozy Bed and Breakfast, but you can tailor the romance to include as much or as little as you’d like.  If you’re not so interested in one of our great value Valentine’s Escape packages, here are some alternative things to keep you going in North Conway and Fryeburg this weekend.

  • Arts In Motion will present Almost, Maine at the Leaura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center right here in Fryeburg, Feb 12 & 13 at 7:30pm and a matinee performance Feb 14 at 1:00pm.  This wonderful tale centers around the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine, where on a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems.  As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost.  The NY Times calls it “…a whimsical approach to the joys and perils of romance. Magical happenings bloom beneath the snowdrifts”;  Broadway.com, “Utterly endearing…It’s hard not to warm up to ALMOST, MAINE. A crowd-pleaser.”  and the NY Sun, “A snowy charmer…These nine tales of love in the time of frostbite have a winning glow that proves surprisingly contagious.”  Tickets available either online at the Arts in Motion website, or at the door – $12
  • Come on up and spend a wonderful evening with guitar great Sonny Landreth, performing at the Stone Mountain Arts Center Feb 12th.  Eric Clapton says, “he is probably the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced.”  SMAC tickets online here.  Don’t forget to ask us for our 10% SMAC discount when you book your room!
  • Also at SMAC on Valentine’s Day is the ever popular, Stone Mountain LIVE, featuring special guests Susan Werner and Harry Manx together with Carol Noonan and the Stone Mountain Boys, fronted by guitarists Duke Levine and Kevin Barry.
  • Ski Sunday afternoon for just $25!  Sleep in a little, enjoy a delicious breakfast, maybe do a little shopping, then head up to Wildcat Mountain and enjoy an afternoon of fun.
  • Take a sleigh ride.  Head on over into the foothills of Maine for a magical sleigh ride over snow-covered fields.  Enjoy the ride by itself or go for the Bonfire package which includes a stop in the woods to build a fire, roast marshmallows on sticks made from the surrounding forest and some hot chocolate.  Valentine’s Day is pretty much booked up but other times are still available.
