And the Tweet goes on ….
Posted by Admiral Peary House in B&B Consulting, Innkeeping, Miscellaneous, bed and breakfast on June 12, 2009
As many of you know by now, Derrek and I aren’t fazed by technology having come into the world of innkeeping from various ends of the Tech world. However I have to say that the whole Social Media craze is somehow baffling me. Facebook is great and we love it, both for the inn, where we’re able to distribute news and things of interest to our growing band of fans, quickly and efficiently, and our own personal pages where we’ve connected with friends we haven’t heard from in many years. But Twitter … well what can I say, except that quite honestly, I’m bored. The concept is great and appeals to my attention span at least. But when all I seem to get from those I follow is either a litany of ads, one after the other (yes certain other innkeepers, that’s you) or constant tweets from other consulting professionals harping on about their latest irritations (do you have nothing better to do?) then I start to wonder what its all for. As with all the marketing we do, we measure. And so far, the Twitter bug hasn’t caught our guests (or is it the other way around?) potential or otherwise. And that, folks, is the only reason I’d keep it up – as a means of quick and useful communication between them and us. Maybe I’m following the wrong people but honestly, I’m far too busy with our guests that are here and with what’s going on in my own backyard to be interested in what other bed and breakfasts served for their guests that morning or what the weather is doing in some far flung corner of the continent. However, the tweets will continue for now, until I’m absolutely convinced of its uselessness. Anyone beg to differ?
March madness and North Conway Ski Season Closings
Posted by Admiral Peary House in B&B Business Planning, B&B Consulting, Innkeeping on March 12, 2008
March is the month when aspiring innkeeper thoughts seem to turn to actually going and buying an inn, so its the month when I’m especially busy with my consulting clients. This year seems to be busier than usual in that regard, so I’m very glad in some ways that vacation weeks are over, as it gives me more time to work on Inngenium stuff. So far this month, I’ve been completing our annual “Inns for Sale Study”, an in-depth look at all the inns and B&Bs that are for sale across the nation. This is our 3rd year of publication and it grows every year, taking me more and more time in research and analysis. Packed with all sorts of interesting data and backed by The B&B Team this year, its useful stuff for all B&B brokers, consultants, buyers and sellers alike, and the best thing – its free (for now), so let me know if you want a copy. Publish date is March 30th. In amongst helping my clients, I’m also trying to prepare 2 workshops for the PAII Conference in Anaheim in less than a month. Yeah! Finally some sunshine and warm weather. I can’t wait. Still, the pressure’s on to get everything done before I leave … AND manage the inn!!
So in normal snow years, the ski season would be winding down, with just a couple more weeks to go. However, this hasn’t been a normal season, so I did some calling around and here’s the latest on closing dates:
- Attitash (alpine) – through second week in April, subject to conditions
- Bear Notch (nordic) – through April, subject to conditions
- Bretton Woods (alpine/nordic) – through April, subject to conditions
- Cranmore (alpine) – March 29th (may be extended)
- Jackson Ski Touring (nordic) – through April, subject to conditions
- MWV Ski Touring (nordic) – through April, subject to conditions
- Shawnee Peak (alpine) – March 30th
- Wildcat (alpine) – Open as long as there’s snow!!
As you can tell, there was quite a bit of umm-ing and errr-ing from the ski guys and it appears as though most are hedging their bets. So still plenty of time to get up here and get your ski-fix! Stay tuned for updates!
