Pardon our Dust …!

So we’ve moved.  Welcome to our Blog’s new home, right here on the Admiral Peary House bed and breakfast website!  And as with all moves there’s still some settling in to be done.  We’ve unpacked all the necessary stuff – the posts, comments, photos etc., but we still have some tweaking to do to the look and feel.  And as there’s a website update somewhere in our future soon (I’m getting itchy fingers but it has to wait until after tax time!) we’ll probably wait till we know what the site looks like before altering the blog.  The good news is that we’re finally home and even better, hooked up with all the other social sites that the marketing experts tell us we need to be.  At least I think we are …..

So let's try this again

Well folks, our poor blog that we started almost as soon as we moved into the inn, nearly 7 years ago, had been so neglected in favor of Facebook over the last 6 months, that I took it offline.  Bad thing to do apparently, as our organic position on Google shows (can you say dropped like a stone?)  So now we’re back and anxious to keep it up this time.  Best of all, rumour has it that we can link our wordpress account to Facebook, thereby only having to post once!  True?  Don’t know, but this post will be the test.

And the Tweet goes on ….

twitterwipAs many of you know by now, Derrek and I aren’t fazed by technology having come into the world of innkeeping from various ends of the Tech world.  However I have to say that the whole Social Media craze is somehow baffling me.  Facebook is great and we love it, both for the inn, where we’re able to distribute news and things of interest to our growing band of fans, quickly and efficiently, and our own personal pages where we’ve connected with friends we haven’t heard from in many years.  But Twitter … well what can I say, except that quite honestly, I’m bored.  The concept is great and appeals to my attention span at least.  But when all I seem to get from those I follow is either a litany of ads, one after the other (yes certain other innkeepers, that’s you) or constant tweets from other consulting professionals harping on about their latest irritations (do you have nothing better to do?) then I start to wonder what its all for.  As with all the marketing we do, we measure.  And so far, the Twitter bug hasn’t caught our guests (or is it the other way around?) potential or otherwise.  And that, folks, is the only reason I’d keep it up – as a means of quick and useful communication between them and us.  Maybe I’m following the wrong people but honestly, I’m far too busy with our guests that are here and with what’s going on in my own backyard to be interested in what other bed and breakfasts served for their guests that morning or what the weather is doing in some far flung corner of the continent.  However, the tweets will continue for now, until I’m absolutely convinced of its uselessness.  Anyone beg to differ?

Admiral Peary House goes 21st Century!

logo_facebookWell, we’ve finally made it into the 21st century.  A bit late really considering both Derrek and I are former tech geeks, but over the past month, not only have we made it onto Facebook, with a fan page especially for the inn, but we’re also both Twitterers!  See – look right.  There we are, tweeting away.  Anyway, if you’re a social media buff too and you’d like to  become a Fan and/or follow us ontwitter, Hilary is at HilaryJonesME and Derrek is jderreks!  Look forward to seeing you in cyberspace!

Innkeepers do get vacations … eventually!

So after waiting for over a year, we finally escaped for our annual holiday to visit family and wander the English countryside.

Our first two days were spent in London. Hilary surprised me with tickets to see the revival of ‘Oliver’ at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. And for those who know of Rowan Atkinson from “Black Adder” and “Mr. Bean”, he played a brilliant Fagin. We also wandered through parts of the British Museum to see some family silver. While there I came face to face with the Rosetta Stone. I had no idea it was in London and sitting in a large glass case in the museum. The next day we went to see the crown jewels and see where Sir Walter Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower of London.

From London we headed to Yorkshire and despite the worst storm of their winter season we really enjoyed our short stay there. Our innkeepers, Simon and Jane, at the Thorney Mire Barn B&B were perfect and we highly recommend staying there if you ever find yourself in Wensleydale. You’ll be pampered! We toured the Wensleydale Creamery (where they make the favorite cheese of Wallace from “Wallace and Grommit”), then moved on to the Black Sheep Brewery to see how they make really good beer. That little visit has now resulted in my first batch of home brew!

From Yorkshire we went back to the middle of the country to spend Christmas with Hilary’s family. Much food was eaten, Christmas crackers pulled, gifts unwrapped, children filled with chocolate, and generally a wonderful Christmas was enjoyed by all.

From Christmas we headed to Plymouth in Devon to find my ancestral roots. Aside from the wind and cold we found some of the significant roots of the Bickford family, to which I am related through my grandmother.

I really enjoyed eating and drinking my way across England. This turned out to be such a fun packed trip that we’re now both ready for another one, but somewhere warm and beach-like.
