Great skating nearby…. about 400 acres worth of ice rink!

The waters are receding and river road is open. My fears of the pavement being washed away were not realized. Although the road may not be as smooth as it was last summer. The Weston and Sherman farms have the largest sheets of smooth ice I’ve ever seen, I know the local kids that play hockey are already out playing. Here are 2 pictures of the Weston bridge pylon and the ice dam. The camera didn’t really show the height of the ice, behind the bridge pylon, very well. It looks like it is about 15 feet high and according to Maine department of transportation is about 1/2 mile long.
In other news, I’m going to tap a new keg of beer tonight. This is the recipe that I’m working on for the Boston Brewing Company contest, Longshot. We’ll see how the new beer tastes and if it follows the beer guidelines for an English ESB. Keep an eye out for brew class dates. Brewing is fun and really satisfying. I’m amazed each time I taste a home brew beer at the quality. I know that sounds silly, but the way the wort changes through fermentation into beer still fools my taste buds. I can look at a food recipe and pretty much figure out the taste of the final dish just from looking at the prep. Fermentation however does some really different things and so far it’s still like opening a Christmas present, always a fun surprise.
Flooding on the Saco
Posted by Admiral Peary House in Local Events & Attractions on January 27, 2010
This has been an interesting winter thus far. Not that much snow, bizarre temperature fluctuations and recently a bunch of rain. We ended last week with negative temps, -8F on Sat and 2F on Sun. Then up to 50F on mon with rain. This caused the Saco ice dam to shift the river a bit and flood the road between Weston’s farm and Sherman’s farm. On my way to work I thought I should test drive the new camera and see what the river was up to, much to my surprise it was up… a lot! I sent these pictures to the local NBC station and they showed them on the noon broadcast. Then Hilary trumped me and was interviewed (the link is on our facebook page) by channel 13. It looks like the road may be closed for the next week or so, therefore if you’re coming to visit, go via 302 not the East Conway road. Anyway, take a look and see what a raging Saco looks like.
Pardon our Dust …!

So we’ve moved. Welcome to our Blog’s new home, right here on the Admiral Peary House bed and breakfast website! And as with all moves there’s still some settling in to be done. We’ve unpacked all the necessary stuff – the posts, comments, photos etc., but we still have some tweaking to do to the look and feel. And as there’s a website update somewhere in our future soon (I’m getting itchy fingers but it has to wait until after tax time!) we’ll probably wait till we know what the site looks like before altering the blog. The good news is that we’re finally home and even better, hooked up with all the other social sites that the marketing experts tell us we need to be. At least I think we are …..
So let's try this again

Well folks, our poor blog that we started almost as soon as we moved into the inn, nearly 7 years ago, had been so neglected in favor of Facebook over the last 6 months, that I took it offline. Bad thing to do apparently, as our organic position on Google shows (can you say dropped like a stone?) So now we’re back and anxious to keep it up this time. Best of all, rumour has it that we can link our wordpress account to Facebook, thereby only having to post once! True? Don’t know, but this post will be the test.
August events in Fryeburg and North Conway
Posted by Admiral Peary House in Local Events & Attractions, bed and breakfast on July 30, 2009
Phew! July certainly blew through here at a rapid pace. We can’t believe that Maine Camp visiting weekends are over for another year and that we’ve said farewell to some guests we’ve now known seven years and whose kids have grown up before our very eyes. Next year we’ll see some new faces around the breakfast table.
The main headline of course, is the weather. Just how much rain can we possibly get? If you don’t mind getting a bit wet though, its a really good time to visit us here in Fryeburg and get out into the beautiful mountains, where water is simply cascading off our waterfalls, and the rivers are providing a much more fun kayaking experience than is common at this time of year. Of course, the traffic through North Conway is horrible, but we can certainly show you the short-cuts and ways around the worst of it.
Two new restaurants are open in town. Right in the heart of North Conway village is Wine Thyme. This combined wine/cheese shop and tapas style restaurant has a great patio from which you can people-watch. And the food isn’t bad either! Or try the Black Cap Grille down by the new LL Bean store. Organic local ingredients, a put-it-together yourself burger menu and a contemporary modern decor make this place unlike any other in the valley.
August is bringing a whole host of events to the valley too. Here’s just a selection:
- Summer theatre is in full swing with “Hello Dolly” at the Eastern Slope Playhouse, Aug 4 – 16
- The annual Mountain Bike race, 24 hours of Great Glen, takes place Aug 8 & 9. Come and cheer on the racers and enjoy the festivities under the event tent.
- If you have a bumper sticker with “This Car Climbed Mt. Washington”, August 8 is the day to put it back on your car for a free pass up the Mt Washington Auto road to celebrate its 148th birthday.
- Comedienne Paula Poundstone is back at SMAC, August 15. Why not make a weekend of it by staying here with us and using your 10% SMAC discount.
- Discover the secrets of really good home brew with our own Derrek Schlottmann, Aug 22. Book your spot on our Beginner’s Brewing weekend
- The 21st Annual Bach Festival takes place in the Pavilion, Cranmore Mountain Aug 23, 28, 29 & 30.
